If you don’t have cable and are watching one cartoon daily or weekly of “Garfield and Friends” (now that all five volumes are out), toss in a special every month for an imPAWSibly good time (see my Amazon list “Cartoons Without Cable”).

I was a huge Garfield fan back in the 80’s and I’m thrilled to see my children enjoy some of the same cartoons that I watched as a child. My 3 -year-old insists on watching Garfield every night before bedtime and since there are three DVD’s in the collection, we rotate them out. I still love Garfield’s attitude and now my kids do too! I would definitely recommend this collection!

It took two Hollywood films (Hard Target and Broken Arrow) before John Woo was allowed to cut loose with his trademark style on Face/Off. The result was his most commercially and critically successful American film at that point in his career. However, for fans of his Hong Kong films, this one seemed like a highlight reel from his earlier work as Woo recycled many of his signature shots Birds flying in slow motion? Check. Guy Leaping in the air while firing two guns simultaneously? Check. Unfortunately, Face/Off marks the apex of his Hollywood career. Woo has done nothing since that’s been as good. So, to celebrate the film’s 10th anniversary, Paramount has revisited the film with a brand new special edition.

Woo works hard to sell the film’s admittedly outlandish gimmick by throwing all kinds of scientific mumbo jumbo at us and lingering on shots of spiffy looking technology. The swapping of identities also allows the filmmaker to examine one of his favourite themes: how two people can exhibit similar characteristics but be on opposite sides of the law and on opposite sides of the moral spectrum. It is nice to see Woo finally given a decent-sized budget to play with and two big-time movie stars like Cage and Travolta to work with. Despite a few audacious glimmers, like staging a chaotic gunfight around a child listening to “Under the Rainbow,” we still get a recycling of Woo’s stylistic trademarks. However, this can be somewhat forgiven as it was the first real exposure for many North Americans to his work on a mainstream level.

The first disc features an audio commentary by director John Woo and screenwriters Mike Werb and Michael Colleary. Woo says that he initially passed on the project because he didn’t think that he could do a science fiction film, but after working with CGI on Broken Arrow, felt more comfortable with the idea. The writers say that Woo concentrated on the characters and their emotions in their conversations together.

Also included is an additional commentary with Werb and Colleary that features a lot of repeated comments from the previous track. Werb and Colleary stress that they wanted to write an action film with a villain that was just as interesting as the hero.

There are six deleted scenes and alternate ending with optional commentary by Woo, Werb and Colleary. There’s a nice, reflective moment where Archer spends the night in his dead son’s room before his surgery and also two action sequences that are extended.

The second disc has a well-made documentary entitled, “The Light and The Dark: Making Face/Off” that can be viewed in five separate featurettes or altogether. Cage and Travolta talk about how they approached their roles, mimicking each other. Cast and crew praise Woo and his signature style and how well he works with actors. The film’s elaborate practical, visual effects and stunts are all examined. Finally, Woo sums up the film - for him, it’s all about family and how Archer achieves closure with his.

“John Woo: A Life in Pictures” is a 30-minute profile of the filmmaker, from his humble childhood, living poor in a bad neighbourhood to a successful Hollywood director. It also takes a brief look at some of his key Hong Kong work but nothing too detailed for hardcore fans. This doc acts mainly as a primer for newcomers to his work.

We already know this is a great action film with superb performances from both Travolta and Cage so I will just comment on the features:

Featurettes includes a decent amount information on all aspects of the script development, making of, locations, casting, set designs, special effects, weapons and the ‘mimic’ acting strategies for Cage/Travlota playing each other. Also includes 7 deleted scenes, a biography-type feature covering the life and career of director John Woo, and the original theatrical trailer.

The greatest disappointment here is that while several cast/crew members appear in newly filmed interviews, both Travolta and Cage participate only by way of vintage interviews filmed back when the movie was actually being made. You would think they would have been proud enough of this great film to come back to document it for posterity sake…

This DVD is probably worth the upgrade for fans, especially if you can manage to get a few bucks for your old copy.

The toughest thing about ‘Frank Herbert’s Dune’, presented on the SciFi Channel in 2000, was that all Dune fans knew, just KNEW, there’d be comparisons made between it and David Lynch’s theatrical release. Although the strong casting, new-found special effects and costumes made Lynch’s version a film to be reckoned with, it still felt unbalanced and lost amidst the deeply textured background world that Frank Herbert created.

The 2000 miniseries gave us more of the actually pages of Dune translated to the screen, but it’s acting, costumes and special effects were lacking.

So, to my surprise, what should appear but a new miniseries with reprising roles and some new cast members for Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune on the SciFi Channel. Goodbye comparisons. We entered new screenplay territory since no theatrical version of any other Herbert novels has ever made it out to the public.

A wonderful presentation, Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune combines the Dune Messiah and Children of Dune novels into this new miniseries and does so with one graceful motion. Well, almost graceful.

I don’t know WHY the SciFi Channel feels the need to keep a “big name” in these films. William Hurt didn’t aid the first miniseries with his ‘Hurtful’ acting. Likewise, I felt Mrs. Sarandon did nothing to aid in the release of this film/mini. Her character was cardboardish and dull. No action involving her at all. Nothing that seemed to help move the storyline along.

Uncharacteristically (and thankfully) Alec Newman reprises his role as Paul (and the new Preacher) and does so with powerfully strong acting (the exact opposite of what I saw from him in the original miniseries). Julie Cox was wonderful as Irulan, Jessica Krige excellently portrayed an aging Lady Jessica, and James McAvoy WAS Leto II. Jessica Brooks balanced the role of Ghanima perfectly by playing Leto’s twin sister. And Daniela Amavia was P-E-R-F-E-C-T as the possessed and tortured Alia (preborn sister of Paul). She’s also quite an atractive lady.

The costumes (thankfully) were also ‘toned-down’ a bit, so the large head-dresses and triangular suit attachments are gone. The budget for the special effects were increased (to great advantage). Loved the worms, the thopters, Alia’s temple. Wonderful cinematography utilizing blue screens.

And the BIG shocker: the musical score! Brian Tyler! You the man! A true triumph as far as scores go, the music presented in this miniseries is sure to make the soul soar, or plummet into the Great Erg as appropriately presented by Mr. Tyler’s score.

This miniseries is the new 5 star TV production for the SciFi Channel, and rightfully so. A presentation worth owning…on DVD.

If I were to choose the best film adaptation of Dune, this miniseries would win, hands down. Not because it’s true to the book, not because of special effects, but it would win because entire series is endearing and the performances of the cast are memorable. This production took characters that were hard to relate to because of their super-human abilities and turned them into people we could care about. What sets this treatment of Dune apart from all others is the dynamic performances of the cast.

Alec Newman, Julie Cox, Barbara Kodetova, P.H. Moriarty, Zuzana Geislerova, and Ian MacNeice reprise their roles as Paul, Irulan, Chani, Gurney, Rev. Mother Mohiam, and the Baron. Even the Newcomers to the cast are: James McAvoy as Leto II, Jessica Brooks as Ghanima, Daniela Amavia as Alia,

Alec Newman *owns* the role of Paul in CoD. While his performance seemed shakey at times in Dune, he embodies the majesty of Muad’Dib and convincingly portrays the part of a tormented monarch in this sequel.

Julie Cox steals the show away everytime she appears. Some complained that the script took (major) liberties concerning Irulan–mainly by giving her more appearances and lines than the book ever afforded her, and making her more likable–but I say anything that gives Julie Cox a chance to appear on screen to flex her acting muscles is a good decision. She plays a very convincing imperial princess with her body language (she has probably the best posture I’ve ever seen, but she absolutely shines portraying a fiery personality trapped by her station in life.

As with Alec Newman, Barbara Kodetova reprises her role with much more maturity than in the first series. In CoD, Alec and Barbara both come back with stronger performances and better chemistry.

Speaking of chemistry, however, there was so much of it between the actors playing the twins it was unbelievable to me that they weren’t dating in real life. James McAvoy, in particular, brings so much spirit and warmth to his role that he brought much-needed levity to the role of Leto by adding humor and warmth to his performance. Jessica Brooks brings thoughtful, pensive Ghanima to life respectably well. It should be noted that the twins are portrayed as teenagers in the miniseries, which I consider a wise decision to make them more relatable and easier to watch for first-time viewers.

Though I had loved Saskia Reeves’ Jessica, Alice Krige takes a turn in Lady Jessica’s shoes very well. She fleshes out the part of the Atreides matriarch and delivers a very reserved performance, which is befitting the cautious Jessica in the book. Edward Atterton (who played Arthur in TNT’s ‘The Mists of Avalon’ and has appeared on shows like ‘Firefly’ and ‘Alias’) plays a wonderfully convincingly warrior-mentat. Daniela Amavia’s gut-wrenching, explosive performance as Alia was highly entertaining to watch, and her last scene brought so much more emotion to the events than the book afforded it. Daniela, Alice, and James came together so well in Alia’s last scene that many people who saw it were teary-eyed after watching it–it had me in tears. The book, however, didn’t come anywhere near that level of emotional impact.

I thought Susan Sarandon’s performance was tolerable–nothing great–but I think it is unfair to blame her. She was horribly miscast. In a show where almost everybody had an accent of some sort, Susan’s thoroughly American accent was completely out of place. Add that on top of the fact that her performance wasn’t as strong as some of the others, and no wonder she’s being singled out as the weak link. She’s just not at home playing a science-fiction villain.

As far as costumes, special effects, and props go, I enjoyed each of them immensely. The costumes are still a bit quirky, but they are much more subdued and realistic than what they were in CoD’s predecessor. Where as the costumes in Dune were downright ‘kooky,’ the clothes in CoD could be considered ‘fasion.’ The special effects were very well done for a television feature. ‘The Voice’ was much cooler in CoD, with soft growls and whispers overlapping over each other on top of the warped speaking to provide a richer, more majestic ‘Voice’ better capturing what it was in the book. The glow-in-the-dark blue eyes are traded in for more subdued blue eyes that are brilliant without looking radioactive. Everything comes together and molds comfortably with the set design, which boasts soft, warm colors and lighting that make the places look like they exist in a perpetual sunset. Indeed, the overall look is a very pretty one.

The real star of the show, however, was the score. Brian Tyler offers compositions so energetic, elegant, and lovely to hear that he gives Arrakis the heart it sometimes lacked in the book. As with Tolkien and his Lord of the Rings, the plot and the characters sometimes were a little dry when it came to good ol’ fashioned emotion. This production would not have been what it was without its music. Brian Tyler does for CoD what James Horner did for Titanic and what Howard Shore did for the Lord of the Rings. Towards the end of the first installment of CoD, a montage of events play out to a song Tyler created called ‘Inama Nushif,’ and my husband heard the television and wandered from his room to come watch what I was watching because he said the music was, in his words, “so cool.”

What this adaptation does with its casts’ tour de force performances and Brian Tyler’s soaring score is make Children of Dune and its characters relatable, memorable, and human, and that is why it was such a resounding success.

Here is a wonderful movie that mixes fact & fiction, sometimes telling factual events in a fictional way. All in all, however, it is a film that is well done & well worth viewing.

It is a fact that Attila did set foot inside the walls of Rome as a guest. However, it is false that he was the guest of Flavius Aetius while both were grown men. As a matter of fact, as a boy the two were “exchanged.” Atilla lived in Rome while Flavius Aetius lived amongst the Huns. It was then that Attila swore that he would return one day not as a guest of Rome, but as its conquerer.

It is dubious that Attila obtained a liking for the hot baths of Rome during his youthful sojourn in the city. By all accounts of the period historians, the king of the Huns lived a very simple and Spartan existence, despite the excesses of his officers and his extravagant wealth. Gerard Butler also portrays a bit more of a debonair and “GQ looking” Atilla than I ever imagined the historical Atilla. However, that is forgivable. After all, this is Hollywood, right?

It is a fact that Valentian III personally murdered Aetius (bad idea) in 454 A.D. As someone supposedly told Valentian, “With your left hand, you have cut off your right hand.” Also, the Romans did sign a treaty with the Visigothic king Theoderic I to aid in fighting the Huns. This was a reversal from earlier times when the Romans and Huns ganged up on the Visigoths. This is recounted accurately in the film.

All in all, this was an extremely good effort. It is very hard to display the dwindling years of an empire’s hegemony in 3 short hours. This movie does an excellent job with the material at its disposal. The battle scenes are fairly well done, and they even pull off a passable battle of the Catalaunian Plains in the climactic sequence. However, the armies are a bit undersized; it quickly becomes evident that the film’s budget did not have the resources for an extensive use of extras. But, the battle scenes are well choreographed & do show off the “tortiose” formation of the Legions.

After the death of Attila, Rome held on to her supremacy for a few more decades before finally seeing her empire fade into the darkness. Rome was one of the greatest and most long-lasting empires the world has ever seen. It was people like Atilla and Shapur who helped push it over the precipice. As such, Atilla became one of the most feared, hated and respected men in all of history. Herein lies his story.

USA network blurbs state Men Followed. Women Worshipped. Rome Trembled.

And Audiences Giggle.

Cross Lord of the Rings with a bodice-ripper romance and mix in a little Gladiator and you have this two-part movie starring hunky Scot Gerard Butler as the marauding king of the Scythian hordes known as the Huns. The Romans called him the Scourge of God, and the real Attila brought Europe to its knees, but Attila in this movie is played by Butler as a tormented man with a sexy overbite and some family dysfunction. There is intrigue and bloodwash aplenty. The Huns are depicted as a rather Celtic, not Asian, tribe, complete with wood sprite who delivers prophecies to Attila, King-Arthur style. These involve a gaining ownership of a sword, with which one rules the world. Okaaaay….

Decent, albeit comic, performances are given as Romans by Tim Curry and some other guy as emperor of Rome about this time frame (the year 452 or thereabouts). Powers Boothe is Roman General Flavius Aetius who alternately conspires with and against Attila. The emperor’s sister, a hot-looking Roman princess in a corsety-type thing I am pretty sure did not exist in that timeframe, seduces Attila in a bath, even though he’s supposed to be in love with the red haired woman his tribe captured from a village. Men never change. Alice Krige as the emperor’s mother is much prettier here than she was as the Borg Queen in Star Trek but she’s bitchy and conspires against everybody, even her own children.

Gerard Butler makes a sexy Attila, and he can invade my village anytime. However, he’s Scottish, and seems to be affecting some kind of weird accent here, where syllables fall out of his mouth in an oddly non-commanding warrior way. Fearsome Attila gets his comeuppance on his wedding night, all right, but not in the historically accurate way. But USA’s way is much more romantic and candle-lit. Complete with mighty Attila wearing a diaper configuration.

Alas, history lovers will find no great interest here. However, if you are in the mood for swashbuckling in the Braveheart mode and eye-candy in the form of Mr. Butler, this is the movie for you!

Adam Sandler is no Burt Reynolds, but his remake of The Longest Yard is amusing enough to stand on its own. Inheriting the role played by Reynolds played in the 1974 original, Sandler plays Paul Crewe, a scandalized former football star who violates his parole and winds up back in the slammer, where an ambitious, corrupt warden (James Cromwell) manipulates him into forming a convict football squad to compete with a team of bullying prison guards. But where the original (directed with characteristic ruggedness by Robert Aldrich) was a semi-comic study of inmate resistance against powerful oppressors, Sandler’s version is a formulaic comedy about winning against the bad guys. That makes it a softer, less meaningful film, and Sandler (reuniting here with Peter Segal after Anger Management and 50 First Dates) lacks the depth to convey anything more than amiable redemption, resulting in a movie that’s easily enjoyed and easily forgotten. A co-starring role for Chris Rock could have been electrifying; instead it’s just OK, as is Reynolds as the prison team’s old-pro coach. That leaves us with a few good laughs on the football field and from Cloris Leachman as the warden’s elderly, oversexed secretary, good work from rapper Nelly in a supporting role, and the lovely sight of Courteney Cox (as Crewe’s nagging girlfriend) in a dazzling low-cut dress. In unnecessary remakes like this, fringe benefits count for a lot. –Jeff Shannon

The outcome hinges on the actions of the five young pilots and their indestructible Gundam mobile suits.

Duo and Quatre, who is the heir to an enormous fortune, hide out in the desert with sympathetic rebels while their three counterparts undergo various personal crises. Having lost a sword dul to Treize, Chang broods and announces, “I have no right to fight.” Heero seeks forgiveness for having inadvertently caused the death of pacifist leader Marshal Noventa–and offers to let each of the Marshal’s relatives shoot him. Trowa is overcome with admiration for Heero’s nobility, and almost kills himself in an attempt to follow his example. Dissuaded by circus performer Catherine, Trowa helps Heero prepare for a mobile suit dul with Treize. Meanwhile, Relena tries to assassinate the icy Lady Une and forges an alliance with Lieutenant Noin.

The plots and character motivations may sound improbable, but the episodes deliver plenty of robot vs. robot battles–which is what Gundam fans want.
